When the Original Part Is No Longer Easy to Buy
A small broken component can make an otherwise useful product difficult or impossible to use. If the replacement is unavailable or uneconomical to source, additive manufacturing may offer a practical way to produce a suitable substitute.
3D printing is particularly useful for low-volume replacement parts because each component can be manufactured directly from a digital model without dedicated moulds or conventional production tooling.
Examples of suitable replacement-part projects
- Brackets and mounting components.
- Covers, caps and protective pieces.
- Knobs, handles and suitable control components.
- Adapters and spacers.
- Enclosures and housings.
- Clips, guides and organisers.
- Suitable hobby and equipment components.
- Custom parts that are difficult to source conventionally.
From Simple Covers to Functional Custom Components
Whether 3D printing is appropriate depends on the geometry, loading, environment, material and consequences of failure.
Brackets & Mounts
Suitable mounting pieces, supports and custom interfaces for equipment, electronics and general applications.
Covers & Housings
Replacement covers, protective housings, caps and enclosures where a printed material suits the application.
Adapters & Interfaces
Custom adapters, spacers and interface components where standard parts do not provide the required fit.
Custom One-Off Parts
Suitable components manufactured individually when low demand makes conventional production impractical.
From Digital Model to Replacement Component
If you already have a suitable 3D model, the process can be straightforward.
Supply the Model
Upload your STL, 3MF, OBJ or STEP file for a suitable standard replacement-part job.
Choose the Material
Select from the available material and colour options based on how the part will be used.
Manufacture & Inspect
The part is prepared, printed using suitable settings and inspected before dispatch.
Install & Evaluate
Check that the finished component meets the intended fit and use requirements before relying on it operationally.
Useful information if you do not have a model
- Clear photographs of the original or broken part.
- Overall dimensions and critical measurements.
- Photos showing where the component fits.
- The make/model of the equipment where relevant.
- A description of how the part is loaded or used.
- Heat, sunlight, moisture or chemical exposure.
- Any pieces of the original component that remain.
A Physical Part Still Needs a Digital Model Before It Can Be Printed
The printer cannot manufacture directly from a photograph or a broken component. A printable 3D model needs to exist first.
Depending on the project, modelling assistance may be possible or we can advise what information would be needed to create a usable digital model. Contact us with photographs, measurements, sketches and information about the part before placing an order.
Choose Material Around the Environment and Function
A replacement part should not automatically be printed in the same material used for a display model. Temperature, sunlight, moisture, impact, wear, stiffness and flexibility can all matter.
PLA
Low-stressUseful for many indoor, low-stress replacement components where heat resistance is not a priority.
PETG
ToughA practical general-purpose choice for improved toughness and moisture resistance.
ABS
Heat resistantSuitable for selected components needing improved heat resistance and mechanical performance.
ASA
OutdoorUseful where UV exposure and outdoor weather resistance are important.
TPU
FlexibleSuitable for flexible replacement parts, protective components and selected soft interfaces.
Nylon
EngineeringTough and wear-resistant for selected functional replacement parts and higher-stress uses.
Not Every Broken Part Should Be Replaced With a 3D Printed Part
The consequences of failure matter. A cover, spacer or organiser is very different from a component whose failure could cause injury, structural damage or loss of control.
Assess the application first
- What load will the component carry?
- Could the part experience impact or vibration?
- Will it be exposed to high temperatures?
- Is UV/weather resistance required?
- Are there critical dimensions or tolerances?
- Would failure create a safety risk?
- Does the application require certification or regulatory approval?
Replacement Parts Often Depend on the Correct Clearance
For most FDM printed parts, typical dimensional accuracy is approximately ±0.2 mm or ±0.5% of the nominal dimension, whichever is greater, depending on material, geometry, size, orientation and other manufacturing factors.
If the replacement must slide, snap, press-fit, seal or align precisely with another component, discuss critical dimensions before ordering where appropriate. Customer-supplied models remain the customer’s responsibility for design dimensions and intended fit.
Replacement Parts Can Also Be Produced in Small Batches
If the same suitable component is used across multiple units, the digital model can be used to manufacture additional copies without conventional production tooling.
This can be useful for maintenance spares, internal equipment, workshop components or low-volume legacy parts where conventional manufacturing is not practical for the quantity required.
Useful for
- Maintenance spares.
- Legacy equipment components.
- Repeat workshop parts.
- Low-volume custom adapters.
- Multiple identical covers or brackets.
Common Questions About 3D Printed Replacement Parts
Can you 3D print a replacement for a broken part?
Yes, where the component is suitable for additive manufacturing and an appropriate printable model is available. Material, loading, geometry, environment and the consequences of failure all need to be considered.
What if the original replacement part has been discontinued?
3D printing can be useful for suitable discontinued or difficult-to-source components because a part can be manufactured individually from a digital model without conventional production tooling.
I only have the broken physical part. Can you copy it?
A printable digital model must be created before manufacturing. Depending on the project, modelling assistance may be possible or we can advise what photographs, dimensions and other information would be needed.
Which material is best for a replacement part?
It depends on the application. Tell us whether the part will face heat, sunlight, moisture, impact, wear, flexing or mechanical load. PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, Nylon and selected reinforced materials each suit different requirements.
Will the printed replacement be exactly the same as the original?
Not necessarily. FDM 3D printing is a different manufacturing process from injection moulding, machining and other methods. Layer lines, different material properties and dimensional variation are normal considerations. The replacement should be assessed based on its intended function rather than assumed to be identical to the original.
Can you print safety-critical replacement components?
Unless expressly agreed otherwise, our printed products are not certified for safety-critical applications. Contact us before ordering any component where failure could create a significant safety, structural or regulatory risk.
